Os Quasares são buracos negros supermassivos que brilham intensamente.
Curioso? Já explico. Para percebermos a natureza destes objectos, é
necessário compreender então primeiro este tipo de buracos negros.
Os
buracos negros supermassivos, ao contrário dos buracos negros estelares
(que se podem formar, juntamente com as estrelas de nêutrons, após a
morte de uma estrela de massa superior a 3 massas solares), têm origem
nos primórdios do Universo, de uma forma ainda não muito consensual,
quando um movimento caótico de matéria formou regiões de maior
densidade. A origem destes buracos negros pode ser semelhante à origem
das galáxias.
Os primeiros quasares foram descobertos, através de rádio-telescópios,
na década de 50, como fontes de rádio sem um objeto visível
correspondente. Na década de 60, foram registados centenas destes
objetos e finalmente foi possível observar um deles opticamente. Em
1964, o astrofísico Hong-Yee Ciu atribuiu-lhes o nome de quasares, que
significa “quasi-stellar” – em português quase-estelar – por parecerem
estrelas mas ao mesmo tempo terem um comportamento completamente
diferente.
Os quasares situam-se a milhares de milhões de anos luz de nós, o que significa que estamos a ver algo que aconteceu há milhares de milhões de anos atrás.
Um quasar, pode muito bem ser uma galáxia em formação, uma visão dos
primórdios do nosso Universo, bem diferente do que conhecemos hoje. O fato de todos os quasares estarem longe de nós, significa que a
formação dos quasares era muito mais frequente no início do Universo do
que atualmente.
